Wastewater woes

  • Southeast Asia is becoming the new “factory of the world”, and facing a growing water pollution problem caused by industrial activities such as manufacturing plant operations, oil and gas refining, construction work, and data center maintenance and management.
  • Coupled with the challenge of water shortages, effective and sustainable wastewater treatment is critical . Singapore in particular aims to have 55% of its water demand met by recycled water by 2060.
  • 500-backed homegrown greentech company Hydroleap is addressing this need with their innovative wastewater technology, and the team raised US$4.4M Series A led by Japanese venture firm Real Tech Holdings.
  • Hydroleap specializes in two types of electrolytic wastewater treatment technology – Electrocoagulation (HL-EC) and Electrooxidation (HL-EO). According to the team, their technology can eliminate up to 95% of pollutants in industrial wastewater and reduce water discharge in cooling towers by 70%.
  • The fresh funds will be used to expand to other Asia Pacific markets such as Australia, Japan, and Indonesia. The team is focusing on serving customers in the food and beverage (F&B), manufacturing, and mining industries, as well as data centers aiming to enhance their wastewater treatment efficiency.
  • Their current customers include Singapore’s national water agency Public Utilities Board (PUB), real estate group CapitaLand, and Philippines F&B company Universal Robina Corporation.
  • Founder & CEO Mohammad Sherafatmand said, “Our intention is to develop global best practices for the most eco-friendly, efficient, and cost-effective water treatment technologies and infrastructure, that help companies meet their ESG (environment, social and governance) goals and benefit the planet.”
