Trash to treasure

  • Did you know that one person in Indonesia produces an average of 680g of waste per day? Imagine if 15.2 million people had the knowledge and ability to manage waste better, the country would be able to reduce unmanaged waste by up to 3.7 million tons per year!
  • Why 15.2 million people? That’s the number of shop owners, credit kiosks, and small businesses on the Bukalapak platform.
  • The 500-backed e-commerce company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Bakti Barito Foundation to support Bukalapak’s partners in implementing the circular economy concept in their business.
  • They will collaborate to train Bukalapak’s partners on selecting, managing, and recycling waste, provide composting facilities in partner stall areas, as well as converting organic and inorganic waste into items that can be reused such as animal feed, organic fertilizer for organic waste, and various recycled materials from inorganic waste processing.
  • “Our commitment is to continue facilitating MSMEs (micro, small, and medium enterprises) to optimize their potential as a driver of the national economy. We believe they also have great potential to make an impact,” said Bukalapak President Teddy Oetomo.
  • This initiative will first benefit partners in three locations – Garut, Tasikmalaya, and Jakarta – before rolling out throughout Indonesia.
  • More than 21,000 vocational school students fostered by the foundation will also get to enroll in various technology classes by Bukalapak through the Jagoan Academy Platform.
