{"id":950,"date":"2020-07-09T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-09T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/markupbackup.wordpress.com\/2021\/07\/21\/durians-daily-59-gender-diversitys-importance-in-tech-learning-new-skills-amidst-a-global\/"},"modified":"2021-07-23T07:40:41","modified_gmt":"2021-07-23T07:40:41","slug":"durians-daily-59-gender-diversitys-importance-in-tech-learning-new-skills-amidst-a-global","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailymarkup.com\/?p=950","title":{"rendered":"Daily Markup #59: Gender diversity\u2019s importance in tech; Learning new skills amidst a global\u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure><img decoding=\"async\" data-width=\"424\" data-height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/dailymarkup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/1lCeFNiz7XyVVSnVjA-Yipw.png\"><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Diversity in tech is good for all<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>While there\u2019s still much to be said and done for inclusion and diversity in the tech industry, things are better than they were before.<\/li>\n<li>In her op-ed published on Tech Collective Southeast Asia, Susian Yeap, co-founder and COO of 500-backed <a href=\"https:\/\/supahands.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Supahands<\/a> writes that the tech industry is aware of its gender diversity shortcomings, citing global tech names like Facebook taking measures to employ more women.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-width=\"999\" data-height=\"562\" src=\"https:\/\/dailymarkup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_60f7da6d04173.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Susian\u00a0Yeap<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>More so, Susian explains gender diversity is important in the artificial intelligence and machine learning fields.<\/li>\n<li>She cited research papers revealing the shortage of female users in the industry and how these biases are disruptive.<\/li>\n<li>For example, a researcher in 2016 found YouTube\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/makingnoiseandhearingthings.com\/2016\/07\/12\/googles-speech-recognition-has-a-gender-bias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">auto-captions performed much better on male voices compared to female voices<\/a>. This wasn\u2019t an isolated case but an ongoing problem, Susian says. And if a software is only designed with men\u2019s voices in mind, it won\u2019t work well for women and can cause incorrect data analysis.<\/li>\n<li>To produce effective and accurate AI programs and software, women must be included in the development process.<\/li>\n<li>However, women are slowly but surely building up a presence in the industry, especially in data-labeling. Just like Power Lunch, this is a series of breakfast talks and group mentoring sessions with experienced female industry leaders, influencers and game-changers over Zoom, capped at 15 pax.
