While a McKinsey report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/~\/media\/McKinsey\/Featured%20Insights\/Artificial%20Intelligence\/AI%20and%20SE%20ASIA%20future\/Artificial-intelligence-and-Southeast-Asias-future.ashx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stated<\/a> development in this area \u201clags behind\u201d in the ASEAN region, Singapore was cited to be active in the field, with \u201cpromising early signs in places like Malaysia and Vietnam\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>One such company is Malaysia-based <a href=\"https:\/\/supahands.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Supahands<\/a>. The 500-backed startup automates tedious and laborious tasks such as end-to-end data labeling providing companies with their training data for AI and machine learning.<\/li>\n<li>How do they do this? With a combination of technology and human intelligence in the form of a \u201ccrowdsourced workforce of 16,000 SupaAgents across Southeast Asia\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>In an interview with KrAsia, co-founder and COO Susian Yeap spoke to how diversity breeds innovative machinery. \u201cIf five 20-year-old men were to create a chatbot, the finished chatbot will sound like a 20-year old man,\u201d she said. \u201cHow could it not?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/dailymarkup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_60f7d9a84918c.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Supahands<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/artificial-intelligence-researchers-gender-imbalance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimate<\/a> showed there is a significant gender imbalance in the field of machine learning, with only 12% of women taking up research roles.<\/li>\n<li>But back in Malaysia, Supahands is setting an example, according to the article. \u201cFrom an AI development standpoint, it\u2019s crucial that the technology provider is aware of the high tendency to create biased machines and to actively ensure as many variances and as much diversity as possible in the process,\u201d explained Yeap. \u201cWe play our part by providing quality training data to our clients with as little bias as possible. Wartella, Ph.D., a researcher in the role of media in children\u2019s development, Director of the Center on Media and Human Development at Northwestern University, as well as a member of the Lingokids\u2019 board of educators, and toddler expert and child therapist, Deena Margolin.<\/li>\n<li>In the episode, they both agreed that acknowledging feelings and keeping open communication is crucial as more tantrums may be expected during the lockdown period.
