One of those was advertising revenue being fueled by smaller advertisers as bigger brands reduced their media spending.<\/li>\n<li>Fashion and luxury goods that once led sales numbers have been replaced by toys and games, gym equipment, home decorations, and electronics. During the lockdown from February to June 2020, the startup recorded 1.2 million searches for Work-from-Home equipment.<\/li>\n<li>During the same period, Carousell\u2019s study found that the average Malaysian made US$336.76 selling on the platform, with over 690,000 transactions for second-hand items.<\/li>\n<li>The startup enabled Malaysian small-to-medium enterprise (SME) owners to continue operating, with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pamper.my\/news\/lifestyle\/festivals\/carousell-and-unilever-launch-the-tetapbuka-online-ramadan-bazaar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#TetapBuka Online Ramadan Bazaar<\/a> during the Muslim fasting season, allowing the sale of food items on its platform and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theedgemarkets.com\/article\/mdec-carousell-launch-rm1m-initiative-assist-retailers-and-smes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#TetapBuka Carousell Business Grants<\/a> worth US$247,000.<\/li>\n<li>Carousell also worked with the Ministry of Domestic Trade &amp; Consumer Affairs to control the prices of face masks and hand sanitizers. Siew Wai <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalnewsasia.com\/digital-economy\/pandemic-carousell-malaysia-evolved-become-e-commerce-platform-people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> the platform\u2019s AI flags prices that go above the ceiling.<\/li>\n<li>When asked if Covid-19 derailed any of Carousell Malaysia\u2019s plans, Tang said the opposite occurred. \u201cIt accelerated everything,\u201d he said, noting that daily traffic increased by 17%.<\/li>\n<li>He added that Carousell is in talks with e-wallets as potential partners to make the platform more seamless.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Digital banking without smartphones<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>500-backed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairbanc.app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fairbanc<\/a>, a fintech startup that offers credit to the unbanked in Southeast Asia, <a href=\"https:\/\/in.news.yahoo.com\/fintech-unbanked-fairbanc-receives-backing-134106804.html?guccounter=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">received<\/a> backing from Columbia Business School\u2019s student-run impact fund Microlumbia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-width=\"380\" data-height=\"289\" src=\"https:\/\/dailymarkup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_60f7db5871e6b.png\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Tech in\u00a0Asia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/in.news.yahoo.com\/fintech-unbanked-fairbanc-receives-backing-134106804.html?guccounter=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>, Fairbanc relies on data science and machine learning to automate credit scoring and risk monitoring, allowing it to provide loans instantly. The startup said the service doesn\u2019t require collateral, credit history, smartphone ownership, or digital literacy. Instead, credit can be accessed through a one-time passcode sent to merchants via a text message.<\/li>\n<li>The service was piloted in Bangladesh in 2019, and Fairbanc later rolled out the platform with Unilever Indonesia. The startup claims participating outlets saw a 40% growth in sales through the program, and over 1100% year over year growth in merchant counts.<\/li>\n<li>With such partnerships, the startup expects to reduce the risks of loan defaults significantly while scaling quickly by leveraging existing merchant networks of established brands.<\/li>\n<li>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifc.org\/wps\/wcm\/connect\/2e53187c-087d-4e70-9656-d537390dd01b\/Two+trillion+and+counting.pdf?MOD=AJPERES&amp;CVID=jm27DN2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>, more than two-thirds of businesses in the micro, small, and medium enterprises in developing countries have no access to finances from the formal financial sector. The unmet need for credit is estimated to be in the range of US$2.1 trillion to US$2.5 trillion.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThe speed and size of the micro-merchant transactions make it challenging for banks to service this segment because their transactions tend to be small and largely not traced,\u201d said Khailee Ng, the managing partner of 500 Startups.<\/li>\n<li>Currently, approximately 80% of Fairbanc borrowers are unbanked and around 70% are women merchants.<\/li>\n<li>With the new funding, Fairbanc plans to continue expanding in Indonesia. Globally, the country is <a href=\"https:\/\/in.news.yahoo.com\/fintech-unbanked-fairbanc-receives-backing-134106804.html?guccounter=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">home<\/a> to the fourth-largest unbanked population, with 95 million adults still lacking a formal account at a financial institution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Rewriting the rules of hospitality<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Three Hong Kong brands\u200a\u2014\u200a500-backed <a href=\"https:\/\/prenetics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prenetics<\/a>, Black Sheep Restaurants, and Tatler\u200a\u2014\u200ahave organised a unique New Year\u2019s Eve celebration at five Black Sheep Restaurant establishments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-width=\"1600\" data-height=\"1066\" src=\"https:\/\/dailymarkup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_60f7db58e3940.png\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Black Sheep Restaurants<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>Mandatory Covid-19 testing will be provided at Prenetics stations near each restaurant.
