{"id":143,"date":"2021-01-04T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-01-04T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/markupbackup.wordpress.com\/2021\/07\/21\/durians-daily-164-carousell-shares-5-learnings-from-2020-to-work-from-home-better-robots-help\/"},"modified":"2021-08-03T09:08:21","modified_gmt":"2021-08-03T09:08:21","slug":"durians-daily-164-carousell-shares-5-learnings-from-2020-to-work-from-home-better-robots-help","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailymarkup.com\/?p=143","title":{"rendered":"Daily Markup #164: Carousell shares 5 learnings from 2020 to work from home better; Robots help babies bond, businesses stay afloat, and students graduate in the wake of Covid-19; This startup developed a report to help the fashion industry navigate the pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Sharing is caring<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>People Experience Lead at 500-backed <a href=\"http:\/\/carousell.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carousell<\/a>, Qiyi Liao, penned an <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/carousell-insider\/5-things-weve-learnt-about-wellbeing-in-the-workplace-in-2020-a0b64403ac20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> titled \u20185 things we\u2019ve learnt about wellbeing in the workplace in 2020\u2019 on the startup\u2019s takeaways from the unprecedented experiences of that year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-width=\"700\" data-height=\"525\" src=\"https:\/\/dailymarkup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_60f7db92004dd.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Carousell<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>While its team\u2019s transition to Work From Home (WFH) had been seamless as a large number had already been on a flexible work arrangement, the extended period of remote working still took a physical and emotional toll after several months.<\/li>\n<li>To address the issue, the startup set up a WFH guide for employees and covered topics such as setting up work hours and communicating expectations with managers.<\/li>\n<li>Carousell also had to ramp up on its employee engagement, organizing regular check-ins to understand how each team is doing and what support is required.<\/li>\n<li>One of the common sentiments shared was the decrease in social interaction, so teams organized virtual lunches and games on Slack.<\/li>\n<li>Before the pandemic hit, Carousell started \u2018Wellness Wednesday\u2019 during which a focus is placed on wellbeing from a physical, emotional, mental and financial perspective. During WFH, emotional and mental wellness received a heavier emphasis.<\/li>\n<li>The startup also learned that some employees could focus better in the comfort and privacy of their own homes, while others missed the ease and convenience of being in the same space as their colleagues.<\/li>\n<li>So it took a flexible approach to working arrangements, allowing some to carry on with WFH while they allowed others to return to the office while complying to local regulations.<\/li>\n<li>Qiyi concluded the piece, saying, \u201cA simple check-in from your co-workers, asking \u201cHow are you doing? Is there anything we can help you with?\u201d can sometimes create a huge impact. A total of 4,730 hours of calls have been clocked in by the robots.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-width=\"1600\" data-height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/dailymarkup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/img_60f7db923fe1f.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Robotics Business\u00a0Review<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>The startup was featured in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2020\/may\/31\/the-five-robots-helping-to-tackle-coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Guardian<\/a> as one of the top 5 robots helping to tackle the coronavirus.<\/li>\n<li>The Ohmni Robot has also helped other industries maintain operations amid the pandemic. An art gallery in Miami and New York, US <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/joanverdon\/2020\/05\/15\/remote-retail-avatar-robots-are-great-at-selling-art-now-what-else-can-they-do\/?sh=2bb938bf2880\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recorded<\/a> US$70,000 in sales and closed a commission worth US$80,000 while a furniture store in North Carolina, US books 10\u201315 virtual consultations a week.<\/li>\n<li>In education, the Ohmni Robot is used in over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/telepresence-robots-surge-demand-remote-classrooms-2020-11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">500 schools worldwide<\/a>. \u201cIt takes a lot of skill as a teacher to make sure that you\u2019re including the people on the screen,\u201d shared Professor David Wicks, Seattle Pacific University, an Ohmni Robot user. \u201cAnd robots\u200a\u2014\u200athey have a good social presence.
